Elders Enjoy Healthy Living in Huddersfield
Elders in the Huddersfield area are enjoying the benefits of an active and healthy lifestyle through the activities of the South Asian Elders Brotherhood.
The organisation was set up primarily to serve the social and welfare needs of a vibrant elderly South Asian community in Kirklees. In addition to daily healthy vegetarian lunches, members enjoy a programme of health related talks, exercise such as yoga, cross-cultural events, celebrations and trips.
Important support services such as benefits and health advice are also provided.
As the success of the organisation took off, founding members such as Guru Datt Bali realised that some formality was required to underpin its management. AFC were approached for advice on setting up banking facilities, committee and a constitution.
Guru Datt Bali explains, “Now that we have a Constitution and bank account in place we have been successful in a funding application which has allowed us to participate in enhanced learning and has allowed us to purchase vital resources. Now the foundation has been laid we are sure the group will expand and prosper further. We are very grateful to AFC for their support in laying the foundation of this very exciting initiative.”
With these basic tools in place, the Brotherhood has been able to build on its efforts, and is now developing more activities and seeking to improve its premises.
Ian Owers, Chief Executive of AFC explains, “The South Asian Elderly Brotherhood is a prime example of a grassroots inspired organisation that recognises the needs of its local community and can work effectively to provide leisure and welfare facilities that relieve poverty, isolation and distress.”
